Welcome to Team Southern Lights.

***New pictures now on the training page from tyre-pulling up South Wales' highest mountain!***

We are taking part in the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race at the end of 2008 to make a difference to the plight of our planet.

We are also raising money for charitable organisations linked to the environment, education and medical support.

“His Holiness directs me to send you His prayers and good wishes for your venture to the South Pole in late 2008.”

Secretary to H.H. THE DALAI LAMA

This is a truly inspiring initiative, enabling many people to make a real difference to our environment.  I’ve been a keen supporter of this work for many years, and I urge everyone to get involved.”

JONATHON PORRITT C.B.E.

“May this journey to the South Pole help highlight the pressures which are stretching to the limit the beautiful Antarctic environment, and that of the whole Earth. We have all unwittingly contributed to the problem.  Maybe now each one of us should contribute to the solution for the harmony of our planet.”
SIR RANULPH FIENNES
  O.B.E.

Team Southern Lights members will be the oldest competitors in this phenomenal event (name of team is flexible at main sponsor's request).

The team comprises Tess Burrows, aged 59 and Peter Hammond, aged 61. They have raised over £100,000 for charity in 8 years and would like to double that with this event. In addition, they will carry thousands of personal pledges for the environment and messages of peace, sent in from around the world, many from school children. See those already received

Stop press!!!

Pete and Tess completed the South West Coastal Path as part of their training for the South Pole Race later this year. They covered an amazing 630 miles from Minehead in Somerset to Poole harbour in Dorset, travelling south west from Minehead and then east to Poole via Lands End, in 28 and a half days.

You can read their updates from the trip below.

Day 10

Love from Tess's mobile at Trevose Head! 176 miles down. Pete is better, but his knee is struggling. Tess is now vomiting, maybe due to stream water. However the sun is out and spirits are good.

3/6/08
Day 12

Walking the line where the ocean dances with the Earth. Always totally stunning - beautiful wild flowers, birds and seals and a roaring turquoise sea. We've camped on cliff tops, in gardens and streams and on paths. Tess still v nauseous although the vomiting has stopped. Relentlessly aching muscles.
Now at St Ives and a third of the way through, having covered 234 miles. May reach Lands End tomorrow! Pete and Tess.

A tough day in the heat. Now at
Mevagissey, and covered 351 miles. Pete has a new method of staying warm at night...he wears his underpants on his head!! Pete and Tess.

Day 20

Two thirds done! 420 miles completed. Now back in Devon, via Plymouth. Last night we stayed in a naturist camp! Pete and Tess.
